The peace treaty of 1904 between Chile and Bolivia, eliminated that nation’s access to the Pacific Ocean; compensation, Chile built a railway between Arica and La Paz, which was to address traffic Bolivian trade. The work involved a serious technological challenge, as the layout had to overcome a high slope, the greater than any railroad in that time has expired. The problem was solved with the use of a system of zippers on the steepest section of the field and the line could be opened in 1913, remaining in service until today.
